Syllabus
The programme
110 courses, 15 projects, over 9 terms
Term 01 Cash Markets:
Derivatives derive their value from an underlying asset. To make the most of arbitrage strategies
between the cash and the derivatives market it is important to have a sound understanding of the specifics of different underlying markets. In this term we will make you familiar with the five most important ones and their interdependencies with derivatives.

Term 01 consists of 5 courses and one project. Your courses are

  • Money Market
  • Fixed Income
  • Equity Market
  • Foreign Exchange
  • Commodity Market
Term 02 Portfolio Management - It's all about risk
Portfolio theory is the basis of modern securities management. In essence it means that an investor can reduce portfolio risk simply by holding combinations of instruments that are not perfectly positively correlated. However, to use portfolio theory properly in practice we have to have a look at the math behind. So after term 2 you will at least be able to calculate covariance and correlation of a given portfolio und understand what the „Portfolio Selection Model" developed by H. M. Markowitz is all about.

Term 02 consists of 10 courses and two projects

  • Portfolio Theory
  • Calculation of Variance and Volatility
  • Calculation of Covariance and Correlation
  • Investment Selection
  • Efficient Frontier
  • Portfolio Research and Construction
  • Beta
  • Strategic vs Tactical Allocation
  • Bell Curve and Standard Deviation
  • The Standard Normal Distribution
Term 03 Introduction to Derivatives
In term 03 we will lay the foundation for successfull derivatives trading. You will learn something
about the motifs of different market participants, the interaction between the cash and derivatives market and the characteristics of derivative instruments such as leverage effect and credit risk. Effects of these characteristics are worth taking a look at. Especially through the leverage effect, trading derivative instruments offers great profit potential, but also carries major exposure to risk.

Term 03 consists of 14 courses and two projects:

  • Motifs for derivatives trading
  • Risk and Volatility
  • Dependencies between Cash and Derivatives
  • The Pricing of Futures and Options
  • Cost of Carry and Basis
  • Cash & Carry / Reverse Cash & Carry
  • Implied Repo Rate
  • Zero coupon bond
  • Pure arbitrage
  • Profit and loss calculation
  • Leverage effect
  • Credit risk
  • Exchange traded vs OTC derivatives
  • Operational considerations
Term 04 Symmetric Derivates: Forwards, Swaps, Futures
In Term 04 we will have a closer look at symmetric derivatives. A term that can easily be understood when looking at the profit loss charts. Although we will provide some interesting insights in to forwards and swaps our main focus will be on future trading. We will look beyond the pure hedging and speculative positions of these instruments and will also stress their importance as insurance policy for business beyond the finance industry.

Term 04 consists of 11 courses and two projects:

  • Fundamentals of Forward Rate Agreements (FRAs)
  • Price determination of FRAs
  • Fundamentals of Swaps
  • Price determination of Swaps

  • Fundamentals of Futures
  • Money Market Futures
  • Fixed Income Futures
  • Equity Index Futures
  • Futures Spread Trading
Term 05 Options: Basic Positions and Essentials of Options Trading
In the next two terms we focus on options. All forms of options are conditional forward transactions, that means that in contrast to futures we talk about rights not obligations on the buyer`s side. An additional contract component that offers a lot of opportunities for complex trading strategies. In a first step it is very important to assimilate the four basic positions right from the beginning. For somebody without prior knowledge in options a careful study of term 5 is an absolute necessity before continuing with term 06.

Term 05 consists of 12 courses and two projects:

  • Four Basic Positions
  • Call Options
  • Put Options
  • Time Value and Intrinsic Value

Term 06 Combined Option Strategies and Structured Products
Based on the knowledge of the previous term we are ready to get to business in term 06. You will learn how to get along with the complexity of combined option strategies for your market expectations. You will also be able to rebuild classic structured products with the respective components of derivatives and underlyings. Once you have successfully completed term 06 you play in the Champions League of options trading.

Term 06 consists of 11 courses and three projects:

  • Put/Call Parity
  • Synthetics
  • Conversions and Reversal Arbitrage
